Wing Wednesday at the Waldhaus

It was a crisp clear night when I picked up a friend, parked at the Bow Falls off Spray Avenue and walked up the snow covered road to the Waldhaus Pub (or “House in the Forest”) at the Fairmont Banff Springs hotel.

The restaurant is situated in a secluded spot by the Spray River, and the moonlit rushing water really made the Waldhaus live up to its moniker, even before we stepped inside.

 

My friend had been to the pub for wings a few months back and raved about it. I’d never been there and was looking forward to trying the special Waldhaus wing sauce that’s no longer on the menu, but that you can still order.

 

The restaurant is a renovated 1927 Bavarian-style cottage, which at one time served as the Springs’ golf clubhouse. The interior has dark wood panel décor and a large fireplace. We settled into comfy chairs in a well-lit corner of the pub and ordered a pint of Innis & Gunn and a pint of Banff Springs Lager.

While the place was fairly busy, our beer arrived quickly—and cold—and the food order wasn’t far behind. We each got a pound of wings for $6 (a great deal considering the regular menu offers wings for $18). The wings came loaded with sauce and accompanied by celery and carrot sticks with a blue cheese dip. I was a fan of the Waldhaus special sauce—it had a BBQ flavour and wasn’t too spicy, but still had a kick. I’m looking forward to checking out the patio this summer!
